Cosmos was the first figure I ever designed. The aim was for him to scale with the growing lines of legends class transformers appearing in both the official and 3rd party transformers world. I wanted to contribute a design that no company had yet tackled but which would also be a simple enough starting point. This was the result, and to this day I am quite fond of him even if I feel I have progressed a lot since I designed him
Having never made a transforming figure before I was unsure where to begin. As such, I started by designing the rough vehicle mode with the intention of slicing it up into appropriately sized chunks for different robot parts and connecting them up with necessary joints and limb components. Considering little thought was put into how the bot would look at this point I feel the end result was fairly effective. Cosmos turns into a fairly simple 80’s style UFO in line with his G1 character design, and given the simplicity of his robot mode instead of devising unique mechanics the transformation was very much worked out as I went along. Cosmos here was the design which pushed me to get my own 3D printer. The cost of 2 full prototypes through Shapeways would have cost as much as my original Ender 3, so it seemed like a no brainer at the time. I experimented a little with painting, but in the end settled on the model-split method for printing coloured components which I am still using to this day. Eventually I scaled the design down even further to fit in with a series of smaller figures I had, and I feel this is the best size for him
